Research firm Gartner has published its report for mobile device sales to end users in Q2 2010. Year-over-year, Android jumped from 1.8% market share in Q2 2009 to 17.2% market share in Q2 2010. In sold units, we're talking about a jump from 755,900 sold units in Q2 2009 to 10,606,100 sold units in Q2 2010.
In other words, according to Gartner, approximately 118,000 Android smartphones were sold per day during the second quarter of this year. In comparison, Apple sold 97,000 iPhones per day, while Symbian and BlackBerry phones achieved 282,000 and 125,000 per day, respectively.
However, Gartner notes that component shortages, such as AMOLED displays impaired sales volume of some of the more popular new smartphones. Still, for instance HTC climbed to the 8th most popular brand in the world, based on sales to end users in Q2 2010.
In Q2 2010, Symbian accounted for 41.2% of sales, while BlackBerry, Android and iOS followed with 18.2%, 17.2% and 14.2% of sales, respectively. Windows Mobile came in at fifth position, with 5% of sales. Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 7 fits well with Gartner's criteria for success, so it'll be interesting to see how Microsoft's new OS will be met in the market.
